Chicago Convention Center Replaces Failing Trench Drains with Watts Dead Level
What the Client Needed
McCormick Place, the largest convention center in North America, located in Chicago, Illinois, was facing infrastructure issues after 50 years of operation. The building’s original trench drains were collapsing under the weight of the vehicles constantly entering and exiting, particularly near the parking entrance. Temporary fixes, such as covering the damaged drains with steel plates, proved ineffective. With the convention center’s event schedule in mind, a long-term solution was needed that could be installed without disrupting operations.
Solution
To address the drainage issues, Watts Dead Level trench drains were chosen. Engineered for high-traffic areas, these drains provide the strength and durability needed for the busy convention center. Their streamlined, flat-bottom design promotes efficient drainage by enabling self-cleaning and preventing debris buildup.
The modular design allows for easy customization, making them ideal for retrofit projects. With an integrated slope to direct water flow, these drains minimize standing water, reducing the risk of flooding and hydroplaning during events. Built from durable materials, they can support vehicle weight while maintaining functionality, making them a reliable choice for McCormick Place.
Results
The plumbing team at McCormick Place worked closely with their Watts sales representative Mid-Continent Marketing, who made the installation process straightforward by conducting an on-site assessment and taking precise measurements. So far, three trench drains have been installed with more installations planned to replace all the drains in phases. The project has been scheduled around the center’s busy event calendar, ensuring that operations continue without interruption.
